You can use whichever length you need to give you the depth you want, though, we advise not to go over 18" where possible to ensure you get the most weight capacity per bracket.. Our other note is to always use 1/2" thick brackets for benches as people will be sitting on them and the 1/2" thickness helps to prevent the bracket from flexing.
